Heng joined Illinois Tech in 2017. Before that he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He did his PhD at California Institute of Technology (2014) with Jeff Snyder. Beside that he holds a joint Masters degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Tsinghua University, and in Physical Electronics from Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Heng was first introduced to thermoelectric materials during his undergraduate research project (Thanks to the mentoring from Prof. Jing-Feng Li, Tsinghua University) and has been working in this field and been fascinated about the science ever since. At LBL he worked on hybrid perovskites and materials for heat storage. He is passionate to apply his experience in experimental materials science and transport in semiconductors to create new, better, functional materials. Currently, he is interested in how thermoelectric properties interact with photon absorption, and how to use it to study new semiconductors more efficiently.

Xinbo joined our group in 2022. He graduated from Qingdao University, China. His current research project is on exploring bulks made with two dimensional tellurene nano sheets, which has the potential to achieve high zT around room temperatures.

This project is supported by NSF. He likes swimming, playing table tennis and origami during his spare time.
